THE DESIGN & COLOUR STORY

Chief Sahquakegick (Louis Espagnol)

This image is an artistic rendition of a photo of Chief Sahquakegick in 1906 in front of the Hudson’s Bay Trading Company. He is dressed in regalia and wearing his father’s war medals. On this day he was on his way to sign the James Bay Treaty.

The Espaniel men were prominent Chiefs of their region and played a vital role in their communities during treaty negotiations. Frise Espanole, our great-great-great-great grandfather, signed the Manitoulin Treaty of 1836. His son, Louis Espanol, fought to secure better rights for his people and became a signatory on Treaty No. 9, the James Bay Treaty. In December 1884, Chief Sahquakegick (Louis Espagnol) wrote to James Phipps of Indian Affairs, seeking assistance for his people. He explained that trappers had stolen all the beavers that his people hunted, leaving them with nothing to hunt. Consequently, they were facing hardship and were unable to move to another place due to their old age.

The history of Indigenous people, the treaties, and the Hudson Bay Company is multifaceted and complex, a blend of sorrow and inspiration. We acknowledge that we will never fully comprehend it. The Espaniel name (spelled in a variety of ways) appears in various forms of documentation, highlighting their legacy of leadership. We aspire to build on their legacy in new and innovative ways.
